The SLR Digital Camera is no longer the poor brother of film cameras. They have now reached a quality to match the majority of cameras using film.

 Today the digital SLR camera will give you all the functions that you could need and most often a lot of function you don’t along with functions that are just silly! However the more functions and tweaks available the more versatile and useful the camera can be in the right hands.

Image Quality
CCD sensor technology is still improving at the top end of quality but the argument goes something like; the quality of the majority of optics equates to about 12-15 mega pixel, at this point the cost of improving the optical quality, surpasses the benefits received. This means digital sensors have already breached the quality optics are able to supply. Consequently superb result can be expected from any quality camera sporting more than about 10-mega pixels.

Optical Quality
SLR digital cameras have a vast range of lenses available and depending on your preferred genre of photography, bias your first optical purchase to a zoom lens that covers a reasonable range. We would recommend using the camera manufacturers lenses as a general rule.

Wide angle zoom lenses – 17-35mm F2.8
Portrait Lenses – 105mm f2
Telephoto Lenses – 80-400mm f4-5.6 VR

LCD Monitor
The LCD is the preview for all your shots along with the menu functions and colour balance graphs, a minimum of 40 x 30mm is required, and a sunshade would be a big help when shooting outside.

Memory
These cameras expect you to use high storage media with fast response times always invest in the best media possible, and ensure you have enough back up media cards to get you out of trouble.

According the above criteria we need to find cameras that have

·        CCD Sensor of at last 10 mega pixel

·        Zoom lens choice from the Camera manufacturer

·        LCD Monitor at least 40 x 30mm

·        Ability to accept 4 gigabytes of Memory Card

The choice is now yours based individual function, lens availability and budget. We would suggest that the feel and handling of this type of camera is just as important as the rest of the criteria.
